One of the first things you should be aware of, is your audience. It's easier to grow your audience if you target a specific group of readers. Target readers that will want to read the kind of content that you write. Blogs have been know to increase web traffic. This is great if you are selling products or services.
If you are blogging to increase prospective visitors, blogging is a great way to showcase what you know, increasing your credibility. It takes some work to find out what solutions to problems they may want to read about. It's well worth the extra effort to research this.
Use good quality Content
What exactly does this mean? Some of this may be subjective of course. Search engines, such as google have certain standards for ranking. They look for content that is error free, no repetition of information and organized in a readable way. Content that is honest and credible and not "spammy."
Using key words help readers find the information they are looking for. It's important to use good quality, and appropriate images. Don't make the images too large, it slows down your site. Don't forget to use links.
How often should you Post?
Again, it depends what you want to accomplish.
I am not a fan of posting everyday, I think it's more productive to focus on quality posts if you are looking for a long-term audience. If you are posting everyday you run the risk of losing quality in your work, and it doesn't leave much time for editing.
But, the more you post the better you will get at it. Frequent and regular posting is a going to attract more readers. Readers will look for your posts. If they don't find one, they may feel let down. Stay on the grid if you can. How often you post will depend on your time and the purpose behind your blog. Try for once a week, and see how it goes.
How long should a post Be?
There is no clear answer on this one. If you know please leave me a comment, I would be delighted.
Just know that longer articles are reported to get more shares on social media according to Seth Godin (marketing guru). My mentors have taught me that a good post should be no less than 500 words. Presently, Google does give higher rankings to posts over 700 words. Include appropriate images too. Be careful about copy write infringes.
It takes some practice to engage readers for longer posts. It should be easy to read and use short sentences and paragraphs. Use subheadings, and lots of white space to break up the text.
Why use Hosted Platforms?
While it's true you never really own the site, hosted platforms like WordPress, Weebly and square space are cheaper, more secure and you can make changes easily. They have SEO (search engine optimization) features built right into them. Many have feedback systems to show you what pages are the most popular, and which ones need more work.
Check the prices and see which platform offers the most for your purposes. You can always start for free to test out the site. It's true that you will need a paid site if you want to have a business. Paid sites offer more options.
Most platforms now have analytic capabilities, so you can montior how each page is doing. For example, which pages are read most etc. Alexa, and Google offers more services.
You don't have to get too obsessive about the numbers game, focus instead, on the quality of your content. It takes time to build an audience. Before you post...ask yourself if you would read it. If the answer is no, then you have to make it more appealing in some way. Good headlines and sub headings will grab readers.
Spelling and Grammar
"The fewer grammar or misspellings you have, the more likely someone will enjoy your phenomenal blog post."
Some say the days of perfection are gone. You may notice some errors on some sites. Even great writers make mistakes. I use a three day rule It's where I leave it alone for a day or two, then give it a final edit, reading it out loud.
These are just a few tips to keep in mind when you are posting. Look for part two of this topic, coming soon.
Content writing and general writing tips are shared in this blog. Please feel free to share your own experiences in the comments section.
