Emotions are part of being human, but past trauma can actually create changes in the brain. Your brain stores your experiences, and how you respond to them--it's like a blueprint. Your state of mind can be filled with faulty programming. When this happens your emotional responses may form a pattern. These patterns can be destructive.
Why we have emotions
Have you heard of the fight or flight response. The instant something becomes a threat to you the brain is wired to produce chemical reactions that help the body respond to the threat. It could be internal or environmental. If the negative experience occurs over time, it can create physical and mental health issues, and create negative energy in our relationships.
Emotions help us to make decisions about what is going on in our environment, and the actions we require to protect ourselves or others. The impact of emotional Abuse
This topic has been under studied in my opinion. Many people struggle with the after math of emotional trauma either from adulthood or childhood. With the negative experiences comes a way which you deal with it, and that combined may become a pattern.
Science has now confirmed that more powerful emotional experiences can actually produce biological changes in the brain. The challenge is changing the beliefs and patterns of your reactions. You can be taught to work with emotions so that you can live a healthier and happy life.
Changing the Outcome
I don't believe drugs are the answer, they may work temporarily. Ignoring your emotions doesn't help either. Many people will tell you to just ignore your feelings and they will go away, even some professionals do this. Even many professional mental health workers don't have the skills to help people with deep trauma. Our modern medical world is more interested in quick fixes.
