Fitness & Wellness tips based on Science
Happy summer to you all. If you've been to a gym recently, you may notice many older persons training. You didn't see that 10 years ago. Read on to find out why you should go to the gym.
I was a personal trainer many years ago, and I am happy to report that the same principles still apply to weight training. Be careful not to get to muddled up with new fitness trends that might be doing you more harm than good. Many myths keep a lot of people out of the gym, including many women. There are many health benefits from lifting weights.
Benefits Of Weight Training
You will be stronger and have an easier time with other daily activities.
Many studies have shown that weight training helps prevent chronic disease, just as with other forms of exercise.
The important thing to remember is "progressive overload." This means gradually increasing your weight, not doing the same weight and same reps every workout.
You may have more energy. Weight training helps prevent obesity, especially as you age. We lose bone density as we age. Exercise can help prevent bone loss.
Don't forget to feed your body properly. Want more information about diet, go to weightandwellness.com Download their podcasts for a good understanding of nutritional science.
"I will get bulky when I lift weights." Not true, unless you are taking drugs, or hormones.
"The muscles turn to fat when you stop." Actually having muscle mass increases your metabolism and that means you burn more calories. Muscle tissue is metabolically more active than fat. You can lose muscle easier than losing fat, so the rest depends on your lifestyle.
"You should go to the gym everyday." Not a good idea. You shouldn't go to the gym more than 4 times per week. Rest is necessary to build muscle.
" I don't want to look like a man." You won't... unless you take certain substances. I won't get into that. You will look toned and sexy. It takes a special kind of training to look like that anyway.
"Working harder, builds more muscle." Muscle overload has diminishing returns so don't punish your body by over doing it.
It's always useful to get help from a trainer...even if you have been doing it for a long time. There are always new exercises and new research out there. Be careful about trying exercises that you see in the gym...just because they look fun. Not all exercises are suited to everyone.
Most of all, enjoy your workouts.
